On Saturday 8th December, an Artisan Christmas Market was held at ‘Urban Roots’ in Tirana.
Organised by myself in conjunction with ‘Urban Roots’, the idea behind the event was to give a platform to local artisans to sell their products, but also to raise money for two local charities.
A total of EUR 465 was raised on the day, with the funds being divided equally between the two causes- Useful to Albanian Women, and Food Bank Albania.
Useful to Albanian Women is an NGO that works tirelessly to promote and protect the human rights and equal opportunities of women, children, and communities in need, with a focus on providing support to those who have been affected by domestic violence. With one in two Albanian women surviving a form of domestic violence during their lifetime, the service that UAW provide are invaluable. Headed by local activist Sevim Arbana, through advocating for policies and social progress and providing front line support to survivors, their aim is so support Albanian women in overcoming their hardships and building sustainable lives for themselves and their families. The money raised will be used to provide essential care and supplies to women and children in need this Christmas.
Food Bank Albania is a non-profit organisation that is dedicated to fight against poverty and food waste in Albania. By raising awareness about poverty and food waste, in a country where 1 in 7 live below the $1 a day poverty line, they work hard to provide solutions to those in need. They work with businesses, institutions and individuals to collect food donations and raise awareness about food waste. The Food Bank provide food to other NGOs and State Social Services who are involved in the fight against poverty. The money donated to them will provide 800 individual meals to Albanians living in poverty this winter.
The market brought together over 20 local artisans who showcased their wares including jewellery, soaps and skincare products, paintings, Christmas cards, decorations, ornaments, clothes, accessories, and more- much to the delight of the several hundred attendees. The festive spirit was further fuelled by mulled wine- donated by Vera Lundra and sold at 100ALL a glass with all proceeds going to charity.
The event was a roaring success and enjoyed by all. Furthermore, it was a great example of bringing the community together to raise money for two noble causes, attracting equal numbers of Albanian’s and expats
