I am a babywearing advocate and have worn my daughter since she was four days old. I often get asked why I chose to do it as opposed to using a stroller, and what the benefits are. I firmly believe that

For mama
- Babywearing is believed to reduce and even alleviate the symptoms of postpartum depression. Whilst it should never be used as a replacement for treatment, babywearing can be used to manage the debilitating side effects of the condition, promoting the release of pleasurable hormones and encouraging bonding between mother and baby. Firstly skin to skin contact has been shown to greatly decrease the severity of PPD over several months and babywearing takes this a step further, giving the mother independence of movement within and outside of the home, as well as encouraging exercise and socialising. Babywearing has also been found to release the hormones oxytocin and prolactin which make you feel happy, reduce stress, and can increase milk production.
- Babywearing allows the wearer to be more mobile and have more freedom. You do not have to worry about maneuvering a stroller into an elevator/supermarket/coffee shop/mall or anywhere else and you can navigate the home, shops, and the pavements with ease. It also means you can get more done in the home without having to worry about keeping one eye on the baby as you move from room to room.
- In the cases of c-sections, babywearing from birth can help you in your recovery process. It is fine to babywear once you are discharged from hospital and wearing baby each day builds up your strength slowly but surely, as baby grows. Many mothers do not even realise their baby has doubled in weight as they grow stronger each day, along with baby. Babywearing can improve your core, stomach, and back muscles, making you stronger and improving balance. It will also encourage you to be active after surgery, something doctors recommend to speed up recovery.
- There is nothing better than snuggling your baby close. Babywearing gives you the chance to do just that for hours a day, as you go about your business. Holding them close builds your bond as well as your confidence in your parenting abilities, reducing stress and making you happier.

- Babywearing allows you to respond to your babies needs quicker than if they were in a stroller. Whether they are hungry, tired, uncomfortable, or just spit up their dinner, you can respond more quickly than you would if they are several feet away from you.
- Babywearing allows you to retain your sense of identity. YOu are free to go where you want, when you want and taking your child with you is no issue. You donât have to worry about bulky strollers or whether there are ramps or wide doors for you to pass through. Keeping hold of a part of your freedom, and therefore your identity is a key part of being a happy mother. Carrying your baby is super convenient.
- Studies have shown that mothers who babywear, breastfeed for longer. It is possible to breastfeed in a wrap or sling and the close contact stimulates milk-producing hormones. If breastfeeding is something you wish to do and continue doing, babywearing is a great option for you.

- Babies that are happy are less needy and clingy. By keeping them close, attending to their needs, yet allowing them to experience the world around them from the safety of your chest, you can create more independent children that are secure in their bond with you, so are more confident to venture into the great unknown. Babywearing does not spoil children.
For baby
- Babywearing has been shown to strengthen the bond between a mother and baby as it allows you to create
a closeness through bodily contact throughout the day. Think about it, your baby has spent 9 months inside of you, life in the outside world can be quite a lot to take in, particularly during the 4th trimester. By keeping your baby close, you foster a relationship that makes them feel secure, whilst being able to explore the world around them.

- Babywearing aids your babyâs development both physically and emotionally as well as increasing language and communication skills. With your baby close, they can hear your conversations, observe body language and cues meaning they develop their own sooner than babies who are not carried. It has also been observed that they display enhanced visual and auditory alertness.
- Babywearing has been found to decrease the risk of SIDs and flat-head syndrome. By not having your child lying down all of the time, their heads stay more round and you lessen the opportunity for SIDs to occur.
- Babies that are carried from a young age, usually become stronger and more physically balanced at a young age. Babywearing counts as â?tummy timeâ and allows them to safely and gradually build strength in their neck and spine.

- As your baby is at your height and sees what you do, they become more curious and interested in exploration. They can do all of this while still feeling safe and secure as they are up close and personal with their parents.
- Babywearing reassures your baby. After nine months of hearing your heartbeat and other sounds from your body, wearing them close continues this making them feel secure, happy, and comfortable.
- It has been proven that babywearing can reduce crying as the gentle movement and closeness to the parent is naturally soothing. This settles them into a quiet calm and often results in them sleeping longer which is beneficial to brain development. Generally speaking, babies that are carried cry less and sleep longer because their primal and actual needs are being met more efficiently.

- If your baby suffers from, or is at risk of hip dysplasia, carrying them in
forward facing position with legs in the â?Mâ position can help correct this. Many cultures where babywearing is commonhave low incidences of the condition and the International Hip Dysplasia Institute supports babywearing in the correct position as a method to encourage healthy hip development.

If you are interested in or curious about babywearing, myself and another mother are planning to run a workshop in Tirana. It will be free of charge and we will discuss benefits and myths as well as giving tutorials and the chance for mothers to borrow and try out wraps, carriers, and slings. If you are interested in this kind of event, please contact me via FB or the contact form on the site.
